Fake calls made from ED Director's landline

Several calls were made from the office of the Director of Enforcement Directorate (ED) Karnal Singh to various people without the Director having any knowledge about them.

One such call was made to Sanjiv Mahajan and the caller asked for his address so that summons under PMlA can be issued. The unknown culprit after making the calls deleted the number from the caller ID of the Director's landline phone. The matter came to light when Mahajan and two more persons received the same call and they contacted the ED office as to why they were called.

A police source said the matter became a topic of concern at the ED Headquarters at lok Nayak Bhawan as three people contacted the office regarding calls from the director's office.

"Sanjiv Mahajan was called on September 5 and subsequently two other people were also called and their addresses were asked by the anonymous caller from the landline of the ED director," said the police source.

The matter was then apprised to the Director who directed Deputy Director ED Rajeev Sharma to complain to police.

"A call was made from the office of Director of Enforcement’s landline to a mobile number of Sanjiv Mahajan and two other numbers. While all the three contacted the ED headquarters and enquired about the calls, the office of the director denied making such calls from the landline. Even after the Caller ID of the landline was checked those particular numbers to whom the calls were made were erased," said police officer.

Based on the complaint of Rajeev Sharma, a case under Section 66 and 66(D) of the Information Technology Act was registered on Monday at the Economic Offences Wing Police Station and investigations into the matter was started, said the police source.
