Extended night policing hours to rein in road rowdies

In a bid to make the city roads safer during night hours, the Delhi Traffic Police will decrease non-policing hours by one and a half hours.

Traffic personnel will now be deployed till 1.30 am to curb the number of fatal mishaps that occur late in the night. It has been observed that number of fatal accidents between 11 pm and 1 am has increased in the first six months of this year compared to the previous year.

"It has been notice that the number of fatal accidents have increased post 11 pm, as soon as the traffic personnel exit. To curb the trend, 15 teams will be deployed at various spots till 1.30 am. Extending the vigil may help curb the trend," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Shukla.

Apart from this, traffic police are planning to work in conjunction with the local police to strengthen security across the Capital.

"It has been suggested that one of the areas to station the new Police Control Room (PCR) bases could be the accident-prone spots in the city. This will not only curb fatal accidents, but will also intensify police presence across Delhi. It will also bring about transparency in prosecuting the offenders and give police an upper hand over the criminals," he added.

Traffic police have identified 79 accident-prone areas in the city. To address any casualty promptly, meeting was held to station Centralised Accident and Trauma Service (CATS) ambulances at these points. Till June this year, total number of fatal accidents have decreased significantly to 799 from 899 last year in the same period.
