The Delhi Police Crime Branch has arrested a boxing champion — declared the best boxer of Haryana in 2014 — for helping undertrial Jitender Ghogi escape from police custody on July 30, police said on Tuesday.

Joint Commissioner of  Police, Crime, Ravindra Yadav said, the accused Deepak Pahal (20), a national-level boxer, along with his associates, helped dreaded criminal Jitender Ghogi escape from police custody in  Bahadurgarh area on Sunday morning while he was being taken to court at Jind, Haryana from Rohini jail.

According to the official, the incident took place at around 6.15 am when four officers of the 3rd Battalion tasked with taking Ghogi were allegedly waylaid by a group of ten associates of Ghogi who came in two cars and stopped in front of the Haryana Roadways.

“A few of them then entered the bus and went at the back of the bus where Ghogi was seated. They allegedly splashed red chilli powder on the eyes of the cops of the 3rd Battalion of the Delhi Armed Police (DAP). They also took away MP-5 gun of one of the officers,” said Yadav.

On Tuesday, at around 8 am, police received specific information that one of the members of the Ghogi gang who played a crucial role in his escape will come to Gandhi Nagar, Sonipat in Haryana. Based on this, teams were formed, a trap was laid and Deepak Pahal was apprehended.

During interrogation, he disclosed that he was a junior light weight boxing national champion in 2011. Also, he participated in various international boxing competitions since 2011.

It was during those days when he got into a scuffle with a fellow boxer at the Boxing Federation Hostel in Rai, Haryana, and broke his teeth, said officials, adding that a police case was registered and subsequently he was blacklisted from the boxing arena.
