A 50-year-old ex-Indian Navy serviceman, who posed as a Delhi Police Sub-Inspector, was arrested for allegedly stealing a BMW car at knife point in South Delhi's Mahipalpur on Wednesday.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, South district, said the accused has been identified as Bharat Singh, a native of Haryana.
According to the senior police officer, the incident took place on October 3 when Khemchand, who was driving the vehicle, dropped the owner of the car at the IGI Airport and was heading towards Gurugram for some work.
"When the complainant reached Mahipalpur near the Raddisson Hotel, the accused who was wearing a Delhi Police uniform with two stars (Sub-Inspector) stopped the car, asking for a lift. Khemchand agreed and the accused sat inside the car. After a while, the accused flipped out his knife and first took away the mobile phone of the victim and then asked him to get out of the car, threatening to kill him if he does not follow orders," said the Additional DCP.
Scared on seeing the knife, the victim got out of the car immediately and the accused drove away with it.
The car belongs to M/s Gupta HC overseas private limited, an Agra based company.The driver immediately made a PCR call and he was taken to the Vasant Kunj (South) police station where, based on his statement, a First Information Report under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code was registered and investigation in the matter was started.
A police team was immediately constituted and efforts were made to trace the accused.
On October 4, acting on a tip off the team reached Khekri Daula Toll Plaza in National Highway 8 in Gurugram where the accused was trying to tow away the car using a crane.
"We recovered the BMW car, arrested Bharat Singh and also recovered a knife and mobile phone from his possession. Further investigation in the matter is on," said the senior police officer.
The accused had retired from the Indian Navy in the year 2001, police further said.
