Son of a former Delhi Police ACP has been arrested by the South-East district police on Sunday in connection with an attempt to abduct and rob an Afghan woman on May 26 near Moolchand flyover.
According to the police, the accused has been identified as Amit Singh, a physical training teacher at a private school in Gurgaon. Singh is also a national level basketball player. In the complainant, Mohammed Kais, the husband of the victim, had told police that he failed to note down the complete registration number of the WagonR car, but provided the last numbers of the car as ‘1160’. Painstaking efforts by the police helped them trace the accused person. “Thousands of WagonR cars in the Capital were scanned and finally the accused was nabbed. After questioning, he confessed to the crime,” said a police official. He was arrested from his house in Freedom Fighter’s Colony in Neb Sarai and will be produced in court today.
The incident took place around 11.30 pm when the victim, identified as Ajiza, a pregnant woman, was walking near Captain Gaur Marg with her husband Kais. The couple was on its way to purchase medicines from lajpat Nagar market since Ajiza was suffering from a stomach ache. As the couple was crossing the road near Ashram flyover, a man came from Moolchand side in a silver WagonR car and stopped in front of the couple. “They initially asked the couple for directions and then started hurling abuses at the woman. They even asked her to quote her price. When her husband opposed they punched him several times. As the couple ignored them and tried to move away, he tried to abduct the woman,” said a police official. Following this, a scuffle ensued between the couple and the attacker during which, the woman’s bag containing around $800, a photocopy of the woman’s passport and Rs 4,500, fell inside the car.
