like any other part of the Capital, the otherwise clean and manicured President’s Estate is not immune to the breeding of dengue mosquitoes. In its recent inspection, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) found around 15 quarters in the President’s Estate breeding grounds for the formidable Aedes mosquito.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), lady Hardinge Medical College and Ram Manohar lohia (RMl) Hospital were among several others on the list against which notices or challans were issued by the civic body.
“A number of areas on Parliament Estate have also been found to be host to the Aedes mosquito. On that campus, 15 quarters of Type-4 category were found positive for dengue. It was identified mostly in the coolers and now we have issued notices to all 15 occupants,” said a senior NDMC official.
Records in the civic agency state that till now 19 cases of dengue have been reported from the New Delhi region. However, last year the count was limited to just one case in the entire year.
The civic agencies claimed that they have been receiving around 30 cases of the viral disease on a daily basis. “It is worrisome when we find breeding grounds of the Aedes in offices and homes. People are so indifferent. We have issued challans and notices to RMl Hospital, lady Hardinge Medical College, Shastri Bhawan, Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, homes in Railway Colony and even a few police stations,” informed the official.
Till now, the NDMC has issued a total of 236 challans and the count of notices sent to various residents and office bearers stands at 3,292. In 2012, only 42 challans were issued whereas 1,012 notices were served to various residents, offices and other institutions. The Council has also decided to organise a rally where students from NDMC schools would spread awareness on dengue.
