Delhi Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution moved by AAP MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj, seeking direction to the MCD Commissioner to ensure that nominated members (Aldermen) are not allowed to vote in the House during Mayoral polls, as stated in the Constitution.
Speaking on the resolution, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Wednesday slammed Lieutenant-Governor VK Saxena saying he was acting like a “tribal chieftain to appease his big boss” by “interfering” in an elected Government’s work.
Sisodia said that while oppressing the people of Delhi, the L-G has forgotten that his job is not to obey the orders of his masters but to follow the statutes of the Constitution.
“By constantly bypassing the elected Government, the L-G has insulted the Constitution, threatened our democracy, and is in contempt of the constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court. The L-G has threatened to suspend and transfer officers to get his unlawful orders executed, and the appointment of the presiding officer of the MCD and Haj Committee members in an unconstitutional manner, is a prime example of this,” the Deputy CM said.
“This House directs the Commissioner of MCD and the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi to ensure that elections of Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Standing Committee are conducted as per DMC Act and Constitution of India,” the resolution stated.
Sisodia pointed out that the Constitution gave the L-G the task of handling the Delhi Police, but he paid absolutely no attention to this responsibility. “His sole task and achievement has been to bypass the Government. A young woman is dragged 12 km in a car and brutally murdered by a BJP leader, but the L-G does not have the audacity to stand up and say that the BJP leader did something wrong,” he said.
“The L-G will not talk about the responsibilities that fall under him,” said Sisodia adding that Saxena will talk neither about land and the land mafia, nor about law and order and the police.
“The L-G will remain busy talking about how CCTV cameras should not be installed in Delhi, Mohalla Clinics should not be built, doorstep delivery should not be done as traffic will increase, yoga classes should be stopped, teachers should not go for training, Delhi Jal Board should not be funded, and medical staff should be removed,” Sisodia said.
“I would like to request the L-G that he is on a constitutional post, it is his responsibility to follow the Constitution and not act as the Sardaar of any tribe.
He needs to work for the public, not to appease his Big Boss,” Sisodia requested.
