Good at his work, Sunil Rastogi stitched five to six pants in a day but he was short tempered, according to Devender Singh, owner of SS Tailors, where the 38-year-old serial rapist — arrested days ago — worked for months.

“It was only when he stole something from my shop that I asked him to leave my workplace,” said Devender Singh. Trying to recall how Sunil was in terms of behaviour, Devender said, “15 years ago, Sunil’s father, a tailor himself approached me and asked me to hire Sunil in my shop. Six months after Sunil joined, he allegedly stole a piece of cloth from my shop then I asked Sunil to quit. Fifteen days after I asked Sunil to leave, he returned and apologised but I did not hire him.”

Running his tailoring shop,  in the area for the last 25 years, Devender said it had never happened that he was questioned about his decision to hire and sack Sunil until he got to know that he was alleged to be involved in sexual assault crimes on minor school going girls in New Ashok Nagar.

Making  a beeline at his shop, media personnel bombarded Devender Singh with questions.

located in the bustling market of A-block in New Ashok Nagar, SS Tailors saw several visitors on Monday since the news broke out that Sunil, the tailor, who allegedly molested 500 girls in a 12 years, was arrested by the Delhi Police.

Sitting on a wooden chair, Devender was busy taking down the measurements of a 12-year-old boy when a neighbour dropped in at the counter and questioned, “Aaj rush clients se zyada koi dusre logo ka lag raha hai Devender Bhai (Today the rush of customers is replaced by that of other people).

In between attending to his clients and speaking to The Pioneer, Singh said, “I am tired of repeating the same things about Sunil to different people.”

“Sunil lived with his parents and siblings. I still remember that he was the first amongst his siblings to get married. living in the New Ashok Nagar area, the family shifted back to their native place after Sunil’s wife suffered paralysis attack.

“Once Sunil left the area, there was no news about him, until Monday morning,” added Singh.
