Eloped couple commit suicide by jumping into Yanuma River

A minor girl and a 23-year-old man, who eloped from their home in Inder Puri area of South-West Delhi, committed suicide by jumping into the Yamuna River on Saturday afternoon.

They were missing since April 29 from their houses. A suicide note, purportedly written by the girl, has also been recovered in which she mentioned “We are going to meet my father in heaven.”

Police said that the deceased were identified as Raj Kumar and his neighbour Riwani. “The victims lived with their parents in Inder Puri area for the last 15 years. Raj Kumar’s father is working with a garment factory, while Riwani’s father died in a road accident three years ago,” a senior police officer said.

The incident came to light on Saturday afternoon when their bodies were spotted by a fisherman near the bank of Yamuna River close to Sunlight Colony area. After nearly two hours of operation, their bodies were traced and fished out from the river. “The victim and her neighbour went missing since April 29. The girl’s family had even lodged a kidnapping case against Raj Kumar at Inder Puri police station of South-West Delhi,” the officer added.

Prima facie, it appears that their relationship was against the wishes of their families. They might have tied their hands and jumped into the river.

The bodies have been handed over to their families after the post-mortem conducted at AIIMS.

“The suicide note reads “As he is going to die, I am also dying. We are going to meet my father in heaven”. Police said they were verifying if the letter was written by the girl herself,” an officer said.
