An elderly couple was electrocuted to death in the early hours of Monday after their house was flooded with the water in South-East Delhi’s Sangam Vihar area.
Police said, after heavy rainfall on late Sunday and the intervening night, the narrow lanes of Sangam Vihar were flooded with water and the drainage system had also failed leading to water getting logged in the area. As the height of houses in Sangam Vihar area is at the same level as road, the water logged in the streets entered the houses.
According to police, the victims have been identified as Deen Dayal (65) and his wife Dhanvati Devi(60). Their house was flooded with water after the heavy rain on Sunday evening. After the rain stopped in the wee hours of Monday, he along with his wife and their son started throwing the water out of their house.
“The water level inside the house had gone upto 5 inches,” a police official said quoting the statement of the couple’s son. Around 6 am when Dhanvati tried to open the refrigerator to take out milk to prepare tea, she was electrocuted and fell on the ground.
After hearing her screams, Deen Dayal woke up and in a bid to save her, he touched his wife and he too was electrocuted.
