Eight-coach trains to help decongest Noida Metro line

lakhs of commuters on the busy Noida-Vaishali- Dwarka line of Delhi Metro can heave a sigh of relief as all four-coachers will be converted into six coach trains by December. This will provide a major relief to the daily commuters on the corridor connecting Noida City Centre/Vaishali with Dwarka Sector 21, which registers a ridership of around 8 lakh passengers daily.

“In a move to decongest the busy Noida line, all trains on the corridor will be converted into eight coach ones by December. Thereafter, to reduce the overcrowding further, all trains are to be converted into eight coachers,” said Mangu Singh, Managing Director, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The six coach trains have a capacity to carry 2,200 passengers, while the eight coach ones can carry 600 more passengers than their six coach cousins.

In order to alleviate the burden on two of its most crowded corridors -- Jahangirpuri-HUDA City Centre and Noida City Centre/Vaishali with Dwarka Sector 21 - Delhi Metro started inducting eight coach trains from December last year. However, the process of converting the trains to cater to the increasing passenger traffic can only be achieved in a segmented manner. “Trains conversion is not an overnight process and takes time. The trains on the Noida line can only be converted into eight coach ones; once all the existing trains are converted into six coach ones,” explained Singh.

Delhi Metro introduced the first eight coach train on the Yellow line last December. This was the first of the total 68 eight coach trains which will be introduced on the Gurgaon and Noida lines. The move will ease overcrowding on the Noida line, which registers a daily ridership of around 8 lakh passengers daily, said the officials.

Officials added that the process of conversion of trains will be restricted to phase I and II only as the trains under phase III will be remain six coached.

“To cater to the increased passenger traffic the frequency of the trains will be increased,” added Singh. DMRC has planned that the trains under phase III will be six coach ones since the conception and no addition of coaches will be made further. Apart from this, the corridors under the next phase will be mostly Standard Gauge corridors.
