EDMC finally hikes parking rates

After North and South Delhi Municipal Corporation, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation finally increased the parking rates on Thursday. After rounds of deliberations, the corporation has hiked the rates to clear the traffic mess across the city with the approval of Standing Committee.

However, confusion prevails among the residents due to difference in parking rates in certain areas. “EDMC is already reeling under a financial mess as they are incurring a loss of Rs500 crore every year. The increase in the parking rates under its jurisdiction is expected to lessen the burden to some extent, said an EDMC official.

NDMC and SDMC had hiked their parking prices on November 1. Interestingly, the hiked rates are just the same and in line with South Delhi Municipal Corporation’s rate table. According to the new rates, for surface and multilevel parking, the hourly rate for cars has increased from Rs10 to 20, and for two wheelers from  Rs7 to 10. The parking rate will increase by Rs10 for each subsequent hour for cars.

For 24-hour parking facility, the revised rates will amount to Rs100 for four-wheelers and Rs50 for two-wheelers. The hiked rates will also make the motorists pay more for the day and night monthly passes. This step comes as an answer to a gross mismatch between the growing number of vehicles and finding a place to park them. The fare hike has come as the key to regulate and manage on-street and off-street parking.

Other than this, confusion prevails among the commuters owing to the startling difference in rates in North Delhi and East Delhi. Previously, commuters were much hassled as some parking contractors demanded old rates, while some charged hiked rates with old slips. Attendants at some parking spots said they feared fights over payments. While most people are unaware about the price hike, some refuse to pay as the receipt shows old prices.
