A day after fire broke out at the Ghazipur landfill site due to which the ‘Air Quality Index’ went up, the commissioner of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) was asked to appear before the Environment Committee of the Delhi Assembly to explain the reason behind the poor waste management of the Corporation resulting in frequent related incidents.

Senior AAP leader and Chairperson of the Environment Committee of the Delhi Assembly Atishi on Thursday said that the pollution levels in Delhi go up in the months of October and November due to stubble burning in the neighboring states, which leaves the people of Delhi choking.

“The air quality of Delhi had improved in the last 5-6 days, mainly since the time the incidents of stubble burning have decreased in the neighboring states. However, a dreadful fire broke out at the garbage mountain at the Ghazipur landfill, due to which the entire East Delhi and nearby places were filled with smoke. The AQI went up by several levels and the air-pollution also increased drastically. Now, a question arises as to how did such a massive fire break out at the landfill area which covered a large area with smoke and pollution? ," he said.

"The sitting has been called to know the reason behind the poor waste management of the EDMC, why the garbage continues to be dumped on the landfill site, and who is responsible for the fire that broke out at the site. It is important to answer these questions and stringent actions must be taken against the authorities responsible for the fire,” she added.
