EC takes a dim view of bogus Voter ID cards

The office of the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer has uncovered massive electoral irregularities involving the use of forged documents to obtain Voter ID cards. Taking dim view of bogus voters, the Delhi Electoral Office has launched a massive exercise to weed out those having multiple addresses. Extensive survey of 67,364 voters revealed that 49,000 voters were not found on their given addresses while 18,000 such voters were found to have two Voter ID cards.

This has been revealed during a summary revision of the electoral rolls after the Delhi Assembly elections in December last year. The Delhi Electoral Office has sought the direction of the Election Commission of India (ECI) for taking penal action against voters. As of now these cards have been cancelled and enquiry has been launched as to how these cards were made. Delhi Chief Electoral Officer Vijay Dev informed that 49,364 voters’ were not found on their given addresses while 18,000 have been identified having holding two Voter ID cards.

This has been revealed through de-duplication software installed by the Electoral Office of Delhi and door-to-door survey. It is learnt that voters who are actually dead or those with fake addresses exercised their franchise without any hurdles. Dev said that Voter ID cards of 67,364 persons have been cancelled and the Electoral Office has sought the direction of the Election Commission of India (ECI) for taking penal action against voters. As of now these cards have been cancelled and enquiry has been launched as to how these cards were made. Earlier, door-to-door survey by electoral office has detected over 12 lakh bogus/displaced/dead Voter ID cards prior the Assembly polls in the national Capital.
