Dyal Singh College wades into fresh row over illegal building

Another controversy cropped up at Dyal Singh College of Delhi University (DU) after a section of teachers made viral a two months old order issued by South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) to the principal of evening college asking him to demolish the newly constructed 'illegal' building.

Dyal Singh eveningcollege is now running as a day college and the aforesaid structure was constructed as a part of infrastructure for accommodating the students of evening college.

"Ironically, the section of teachers who are opposed "tooth and nail" to the evening college acting as a day college, alleging "lack of infrastructure" and "overburden" on morning infrastructure, are the ones who want additional infrastructure for evening to be demolished", said a teacher of Dyal Singh on anonymity.

The above mentioned block as of now has 14 rooms with capacity to accommodate around 700 students and is acting as a semi permanent structure (SPS) block. In addition to it a new academic block having 4 floors is exclusively the part of evening college infrastructure, said Pawan Sharma, Principal of Dyal Singh (Evening) College. The SPS was constructed at the place where the old canteen existed but was presently discarded and was used as dumping ground.

The demolition order by the SDMC stated that the construction is "unauthorized", "not protected" and "liable to be demolished". The order had asked for demolishing the structure within 6 days.

Associate Professor PK Parihar of Dyal Singh College said that the evening principal not only ignored the SDMC orders but also constructed additional rooms to the illegal infrastructure.

"We want that illegal constructed building should be immediately demolished. How can a college run in an illegal building?" said Parihar.

While Pawan Sharma, principal of Dyal Singh evening said that he had already approached the appropriate authority for relief.
