DUSU prez 'misbehaves' with DUTA chief

A high drama unfolded outside the Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Tyagi’s office after DUSU president Satender Awana allegedly misbehaved with some teachers, including DUTA president Nandita Narain on Monday. Narain was sitting on a protest alongside the students of Daulat Ram College who were protesting over the infrastructural issues in the college.

While Awana, who is also a member of the ABVP refuted the allegations, DUTA accused him of “manhandling” former president Aditya Narayan Misra and Joint Secretary Rajesh Jha.

According to DUTA, Awana “caught them by collar” and abused them, accusing them of supporting JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar, shouting “pro-Pakistan slogans” and supporting “Azadi in Kashmir”. Narain was also called names by Awana which the DUTA “condemned” and asked for an immediate action by the university against him.

Awana, on the other hand, said that he identified “two persons” whose names he did not know but had seen them in the infamous February 9 event at JNU. “I was leading the protest of the Daulat Ram College. I could identify these two persons and fumed. I approached Narain complaining why she allowed them here and things turned bad there. But I did not manhandle anyone. I have filed complaints against the two persons with the police,” Awana told The Pioneer.

The students of Daulat Ram College have been protesting against the Governing Body and Principal over the “poor infrastructure” in classrooms.  “We first protested inside the college and then took our protest to the V-C lodge where we had asked for the support from DUTA. We had clicked pictures of the worn out plaster of classrooms... We have just one washroom and water is also not available thus we need immediate attention from the authorities,” said a student.

Both DUTA and ABVP have written their complaints before police. However, no action, neither police nor from the DU has come so far. DUTA said that the concerned police station SHO could not extend any help to them on the spot.
