Delhi University’s School of Open learning (SOl) is opening its doors for the students living in the NCR  with its initiatives to create study centres across Ghaziabad, Noida, Gurgaon and Faridabad. The SOl has approached the University Grants Commission to facilitate in this initiative by creating study centres in colleges and institutes for the SOl students in these areas to make it more accessible.

Director of the SOl, Prof CS Dubey told The Pioneer that he has written to the UGC chairman to provide Government institutions and colleges for opening study centres for the SOl students in these areas. “We have 50,000 students enrolled in different courses from the NCR and they commute all the way to Delhi to attend classes. We have initiated to start study centres for better learning in this region,” said Dubey.

In Delhi region, the SOl is putting in efforts to expand the study centres. Dubey said they have written to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seeking his intervention in opening the study centres in Delhi Government’s colleges across the Capital.

“After the colleges in Delhi finish the classrooms in the afternoon for regular students, they could be used for the students of SOl as study centres. On weekends — Saturdays and Sundays — colleges can open up more classrooms for study centres,” he added.

last year, the SOl had written to 50 colleges of the university, requesting for increasing the study centres. Out of these, Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, Gargi College and Miranda House has approved using more classrooms as study centres for the students.

According to the officials at the School, the student-teacher ratio has improved since last year. Number of teachers has increased from 1,000 to 1,500 while the classrooms have been increased from 1,000 to 1,350.
