Delhi University (DU) has initiated the process to start school of journalism on lines of world-famous Columbia School of Journalism in a year from now.
In a recent Academic Council (AC) meeting, Vice Chancellor of DU Yogesh Tyagi tabled the vision document of the school, where he said he has “decided” on the location of the school already. However, he didn’t reveal much, said a source.
“The AC members approved to constitute the core committee for initiating the making of the School of Journalism. The V-C wants it to of international standards and on lines of Columbia School of Journalism,” AC member, RN Dubey told The Pioneer.
The core committee would construct the format for the school including the structure. The varsity offers courses in media and journalism at undergraduate level in some of its known colleges. Delhi University’s renowned colleges like Indraprastha College for Women, Kamla Nehru College, lady Shri Ram College and Kalindi College offer the undergraduate degrees in Mass Media and Journalism.
“This school will have nothing to do with the colleges of the university which provide an undergraduate degree in mass communication and journalism. It would be a separate study and research centre… Besides post graduate degrees, school will offer research degrees of MPhil and PhD. The school would be facilitated with research avenues and also integrated media platforms,” Dubey added.
The media research in higher educational institutes is offered in Jawaharlal Nehru University and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University. JNU has a Centre for Media Studies in the School of Social Sciences. Delhi University's new initiative could be a platform for many aspirants of media research.
