'Dumped' sanitation workers raise stink, padlock DMSWl office

Miffed over the non-payment of salaries yet again, nearly 100 angry safai karamcharis (sanitation workers) on Monday locked the Delhi Municipal Solid Waste Solutions ltd office in Model Town in a bid to get their demands over the payment of salaries heard. The DMSWl’s office, located in Civil lines, is used as a parking space for about 200 garbage dumping vehicles. The angry lot of workers locked the office to stop the movement of these vehicles and thereby affect the daily service. The workers have alleged that the retired personnel have not received their salaries for the past four months and are demanding regular payment of salaries.

“We will throw litter in front of DC’s office, MCD Commissioner’s office and Kejriwal’s home if our demands are not met,” said Chaudhary Bal Kishan, President of Dilli Kamghar Parishad. Mayor of North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) Ravindra Gupta said if Delhi Government fails to release the dues worth Rs2,000 crore, the employees will launch a stir against the Arvind Kejriwal dispensation. “If the Kejriwal Government doesn’t releases the due funds, then Kejriwal would be gheraoed by sanitation workers and sit-ins would be staged against him,” Gupta said.

“We wrote to the NDMC Commissioner PK Gupta four months ago but they never got back. In fact, we also lodged a protest on April 25 and a meeting was thereby held by the MCD. We were told that our salaries would be disbursed by the 7th of this month but they were all fake assurances,” added Kishan. “MCD says they have not received salaries. CM says funds have been released. We are struggling to make ends meet with borrowed money. Who pays schools fees and buys rationsIJ” asked Rohtas, vice president of Dilli Nagar Nigam, Safai Mazdoor Sangh.
