To woo the significant Poorvanchali voters for the upcoming Assembly elections in Delhi, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation on Tuesday elected Ramnarayan Dubey as its Mayor replacing Annapurna Mishra. This is for the second time in a row that a Poorvanchali leader has been handed over the command of the East Delhi Civic Body which is estimated to have over 40 lakh Poorvanchali voters.
Dubey, the BJP Councillor from Dilshad Garden, was elected Mayor of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation defeating the Congress candidate. Dubey defeated Congress nominee Rajeev Verma getting support of 44 Councillors out of the total 66 votes polled in the house. While the corporation has 64 members, member of legislative Assembly and Parliament from the area are also eligible for voting.
While members of Parliament stayed away from voting, three MlAs from the area exercised their franchise. One seat out of 64 is falling vacant due to demise of one Councillor.
Apart from Dubey, BJP Councillor from Anand Vihar Mahendra Ahuja was elected unopposed as deputy Mayor after the Congress candidate Raj Kumari withdrew her nomination. Elections were held as the one-year term of the incumbent Mayor Annapurna Mishra and deputy Mayor Usha Rani Shastir came to an end. Three Standing Committee members were also elected after the positions fell vacant when a draw of lots ousted three members. Sanjay Surjan and Sanjay Kaushik of BJP and Varyam Kaur of Congress were the only ones in the race and were elected for the high-powered committee.
