DU to give 5% quota to Kashmiri migrants

Delhi University is to give a five per cent quota to Kashmiri migrants from the upcoming admission season.

The decision was taken in the admissions committee meeting on Monday after directions from the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD). However, the designated quota will be supernumerary which means that five per cent seats will be added to the total number of seats in the course so that admission to general and other category students is not affected by this quota.

Besides, eligible students will also be given a 10 per cent relaxation on the cut-off to meet the criteria of the newly designated quota. In a letter to the university, the MHRD has asked for “concession for the wards of Kashmiri migrants for admission during academic session 2016-17”.

“The call was taken in the meeting that five per cent supernumerary quota would be availed by the Kashmiri migrants in the varsity. Earlier it was just three seats per college while now it would be five per cent per course,” a member of the admission committee told The Pioneer.

A copy of representations of Vijay Aima, President, All India Kashmiri Samiti and Ravi Pandit from Noida addressed to the MHRD were enclosed to the letter, sent to the university.

According to the DU official, the Kashmiri migrants from Delhi and Jammu can avail this facility. He said the Government wants to get more Kashmiri migrants in the Delhi University.

The admission to the institution will begin on May 28. Earlier also, the wards of Kashmiri migrants were registered centrally by the university for admission to various undergraduate courses in different streams. The allotment of seats to the courses/colleges was on the basis of preference-cum-merit, not more than three seats in one college, one seat in one stream.
