A 19-year-old Delhi University student, hailing from Manipur, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan of his rented accommodation in the Sant Nagar area of North Delhi’s Burari on Tuesday night.

Senior police officials of the North district said that no suicide note was recovered from the body of the student. Jatin Narwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), said, “Inquest proceedings are being conducted as per law. No foul play is suspected. No suicide note has been recovered from the body. The body has been shifted to the Subzi Mandi mortuary.”

Police said that the deceased, Hijam Bharat Singh was a second year student of Satywati College. The incident came to the fore on Tuesday night at around 9:30pm when cousins of Bharat — Gautam and Rohin — who share the rented accommodation returned and found the main door of the house locked.

Through a window, they saw him hanging from the ceiling fan. They made a call to the Police Control Room after which a team of local police rushed the youth to the nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Bharat’s father works in a private firm. Police said that his family has been informed about the incident. The body of the student has been preserved in the mortuary. Once his family reaches Delhi, doctors will carry out detailed post mortem examination of the deceased.
