Students who have studied vocational subjects in Class XII may see closed doors at the Delhi University this admission season as with the rollback of the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) even the common eligibility criteria has been removed. Thus, like the previous years, students who have studied subjects like Fine Arts, Web Technology and Physical Education would have to hunt for colleges which would allow them to consider a vocational subject in ‘best of four’ aggregate.
The university had earlier allowed a student to include as many as three vocational subjects after deducting 10 marks in each subject. However, now students would have to revert to the rules as per the 2012-13 admissions where only one vocational subject can be included in the ‘best of four’ while applying to a BA Honours course and that too would be subject to additional eligibility criteria enforced by each college. “As per the 2012-13 rules, students who have studied more than one vocational subject will not be eligible to admission to the Honours programme of the university,” said a university official.
Officials in the university added, “Students who are allowed to consider Fine Arts in the ‘best of four’ for Economics Honours in ‘X’ college may not be eligible for admission in the same course at ‘Y’ college because of Fine Arts being removed from ‘best of four’.” This would also be applicable in terms of the amount of percentage that will be deducted depending on the vocational subject in best of four.
The crisis for students doesn’t just end with the debacle of vocational courses. The decision on what subjects can be considered elective is also debatable. The standard procedure to calculate the ‘best of four’ aggregate for admission in BA Honours courses as per 2012-13 norms is one language, two elective subjects and one vocational. However, the list of elective subjects is an outdated one.
