DU relaxes attendance rules

The Delhi University has finalised the attendance rules for the new Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) according to which students with an overall attendance of 40 per cent would be allowed to write the semester examination. This will be done on the condition of making up for the attendance on the given criteria of 66 per cent in the following semester.

“Attendance of all the semesters will be taken together. The students with at least 40 per cent attendance in the odd semesters 1, 3, 5 and 7 would be eligible to write the examination. This will have to be compensated by getting a total of set criteria which is 66 per cent of attendance in the 2, 4 and 6 semesters, failure of which will lead to their non-eligibility to sit for the respective examination,” said Alka Sharma, the Registrar of the university.

However, the decision of allowing a student his admit card would entirely depend on the principal of the college. “If the student is absent in any of the odd semesters, he/she will be obliged to present the reasons before the college principal. It is on the principal’s discretion that the student would be allowed to carry on with the examination on the given terms. It will constitute the cases of students with timely submission of presentations, practicals, projects, research work and on the grounds of health and any genuine issues,” she added.

The Deputy Registrar, Ram Dutt, said the criteria is almost same as earlier but with some changes as the students have the freedom to make up for the attendance that he/she would miss out on but the rules are more stringent.

From the new academic session, it will be mandatory for all the colleges to upload the monthly attendance on their website. It will also include the status of the projects and practicals and students too will have to necessarily update the status of their attendance

The students participating in extra-curricular activities like the NCC, NSS, social work, intercollege and youth festivals will be given the benefit in the attendance missed on account of the official participation.

Meanwhile, Sharma said that the university had not yet formed a unanimous decision on the span period of the new FYUP. “We are focussed on the Academic Council meeting. The span period was discussed to be around eight years but nothing is confirmed on it. We will take it up only after the other things are sorted in the meeting,” she added.
