The North District Police is investigating a case of sexual harassment against Delhi University Professor RK Bhatt, who faces arrest after a city court rejected his bail application.

A library Sciences degree student had lodged an official complaint with the Sexual Harassment Committee (SHC) of DU way back in 2011, but the panel kept dilly-dallying. They even asked the girl to produce call detail records (CDR) to prove she was receiving calls from the professor.

Their cavalier attitude pushed the girl to approach the police and a case was registered at Maurice Nagar Police Station.

“A few days ago, the victim approached the police for CDR of her phone. She narrated her ordeal when an officer asked the reason,” said a senior police officer said.

After getting the complete picture, the police refused to provide her CDR unless she lodged a lodged a complaint of molestation.

“She told the police that Professor Bhatt, head of the department of library and information science, had allegedly sexually harassed her in class and also over the phone, in 2011,” said the police.

She alleged that the professor had called her several times on her personal number and asked her to meet her in a secluded place. When she refused, he threatened her with dire consequences.

“She had later approached her seniors and lodged an official complaint with the SHC. After her complaint, Bhatt had misbehaved with her and started insulting her in front of other students,” the officer added.

The student hoped the college committee would take action and hesitated about going to the police.

“We have started investigation but at the same time, Bhatt had applied for bail. However, the city court rejected his bail application. Now we are going arrest him,” the officer added.
