DU junks colleges' extra criteria

Aiming at simplifying admission process, the Delhi University (DU) on Saturday decided that its colleges would not be allowed to impose any extra eligibility criteria for students seeking admission to undergraduate programmes for the session 2015-16, beginning from May 28. “A student applying in five different colleges will have the same criteria for admission in all of them. Colleges will not be allowed to impose any extra eligibility criteria for students. Rules will be same for all and as per set by the university,” DU’s Dean of Students Welfare JM Khurana said, while addressing a Press conference on Saturday.

The decision, however, would not apply to minority colleges such as St Stephen’s and Jesus and Mary Colleges, which would announce their own admission criteria and come out with their cut-off lists. Till last year, students used to be in a dilemma whether his/her aggregate marks would be enough to get admission, as colleges used to impose additional riders such as above 85 per cent in Mathematics required for admission.

Besides, DU colleges would now be mandated to enroll all the students meeting their cut-off criteria and there would be no first-come, first-served policy for undergraduate admissions, which is likely to start from May 28 and will continue till June15, 2015. While the date to submit offline admission form is from June 5, 2015 to June 15, 2015. Unlike earlier years, this time the DU has allotted eight different colleges for the admissions. These colleges are Atma Ram Sanatan Dharam College, Dyal Singh College, Gargi College, Maharana Pratap College, PGDAV College, Rjadhani College, Shyam College and Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce.

“We have finalised this centers which are near to Metro stations and on the Ring Road. Students can easily find and reach these centers to submit their application forms,” said DU officials.

This is the first time when the Delhi University has centralised the admission eligibility criteria; this means that no college of Delhi University would be allowed to use their own additional eligibility criteria and all the information regarding admission would be uploaded on DU website.

“There will be a deduction of 2.5 per cent marks for each subject if student wants to pursue under graduation which is different from his/her subjects in twelfth standard,” said a DU official. The candidates who are applying for B.com and BA in Economic honours should have minimum passing marks in Maths, he added.

The students who are applying their admissions in St. Stephen’s College and Jesus and Mary College; would have to give entrance test as they have different set of admission rules.

The Delhi University (DU) would be releasing its first cut-off list on June 25 at 9 am and the admission and payment of fees will begin on the same day and will extend till June 27 for first cut off list candidates.
