leftist Student groups of Delhi University (DU) took out a rally on Monday against the varsity’s decision to introduce the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme.
The protest in the university's Arts Faculty in North Campus was organised by groups: the Students Federation of India (SFI), Campus Front of India (CFI), Democratic Students Union (DSU) and All India Student's Association (AISA). On the same day, many students and teachers were taken into custody, while they staged another torch-light procession at India Gate.
“Delhi University is not ready for the FYUP. It lacks the adequate infrastructure and teachers. Students and teachers need to be clearly informed about the programme before it is implemented," said Sunny Kumar, Delhi Secretary of AISA. They shouted slogans and demanded to meet Vice-Chancellor of DU Dinesh Singh. The new course system has faced strong opposition from student groups and the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA). They are demanding the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor, who has put the four-year course under implementation from the coming academic session.
Under FYUP, a compulsory foundation course will be taught in the first four semesters to students of all disciplines in order to strengthen their educational base.
