DU counseling for admission to professional UG courses to go online

The Delhi University (DU) will introduce “online counseling” system for admission to its professional undergraduate (UG) courses from upcoming academic session 2018-19. It would be introduced for all professional undergraduate courses on a ‘pilot’ basis. DU is planning to launch it on full scale covering all the UG courses offered by it from the next academic session.

The DU offers admissions into nine professional UG courses and the admission is granted on the basis of entrance test or exam. Bachelor of Management Studies, BA (Hons) Business Economics, Bachelor of Business Administration etc are among these courses. This year with the launch of Delhi School of Journalism, which offers a five year integrated programme in journalism, one new course has been added to the list of professional courses.

Apart from it, DU offers almost 55-60 UG courses, including both in science and humanities the admission to which is based on merit. The merit-based UG courses are the one that are most sought out in the university.

The admission committee in its meeting held on Friday recommended the system of online counseling only for entrance-based professional UG courses for this year on pilot basis to check its feasibility. Admission committee member said on the condition of anonymity that if the pilot testing of online counseling is successful then it will be introduced on large scale for all UG courses. Also, the admission committee is mulling and exploring the possibility of implementing it for the Postgraduate (PG) courses from this year only.

The system of “online counseling” is DU’s bid towards full-scale digitalisation. It is one among the slew of measures the DU has taken to make its admission process more digital. Among these is the DU's plan of conducting Computer-Based Online Test (CBOT) for all PG courses from this year.

The admission committee member told that in the “online counseling”, aspirants will have to lock the seat allocated to him online but will always have an option to ‘upgrade’. Thus in an online counseling a student will never be out of the race for admission and will neither have to run from pillar to post to get his present admission status cancelled before opting for another seat falling in his bag.
