The ruckus created at the Kirori Mal College (KMC) regarding admissions under the sports and extracurricular activities (ECA) quota, forced the Delhi University make an exception for the college granting it the liberty to admit students to five per cent of the total seats in the college. This means that students eligible under the quota can choose the course they want unlike other colleges where five per cent of seats per course were kept aside for the quota. Admissions took place for the quota at KMC on Friday.
A university directive was issued to KMC on Thursday night which instructed them to hold admissions under the quota for 60 seats, which is five per cent of the total seats in the college. Thus, this is the only college to have admitted students this way. According to the directives issued by the university, admission under the sports and ECA quota should take place for five per cent of seats per course per college.
Kirori Mal was the only college left in the university which had not yet admitted students under the sports and ECA quota. This was because students eligible for admission under this quota wanted to choose their own subjects else they were picking other colleges. This problem had stalled the entire procedure as the principal refused to bend university rules. The decision of admitting students finally took place after parents and students created a scene on Thursday outside the Vice Regal lodge and at the college.
Sources in the university feel that this exception has been made by the university to favour students. “KMC didn’t admit students under the quota even last year. The students should not suffer. Thus, to put an end to this problem the university decided to give this provision,” said the source.
