As the admissions to Delhi University progress, the most-sought after courses so far have been BA (Honours) English, BA Prorgamme and B.A (Honours) Political Science.
BA (Honours) English is at the top. While BSc Mathematics (Honours) is lagging behind which experts believe is due to the “not so good” results in the Central Board of Secondary Education.
“The most sought after courses by the applicants so far are: BA (Honours) English, BA Programme, BA (Honours) Political Science, BCom and BA (Honours) Economics. This year the students have not applied for Mathematics like they used to because the result in this subject was not as good as it used to be. It has demoralised students,” a DU official said.
He said another reason could be that the applicants are fearing the “high cut-offs” as BA programme was not a popular course earlier. “However, the cut-offs might go up in these courses now as more applications have been received. The possibilities of cut-offs going high in them are more,” he added.
Deputy Dean, Dean Students’ Welfare, Gurpreet Singh Tuteja told The Pioneer that the popularity of English Honours is due to its “eligibility criteria”. “Whether a student is from Science, Humanities or Commerce, s/he is eligible to apply for English Honours as everyone studies English in their schools. There is a myth In Mathematics, people think only Science students are eligible but if they have studied Mathematics with Humanities and Commerce, they are eligible for BSc. Mathematics (Honours), he said.
Political Science has been trending because of its popularity in the civil services. “A lot of students take Political Science while preparing for civil services and many with the subject have qualified as well. Thus, the applicants have turned this subject with an aim to qualify civil services,” said another official.
The last date for registering in the undergraduate courses of the DU is June 19. The first cut-off would be released on June 27.
