The Delhi Technological University guard who was seen in a video hammering a dog to death last month has been arrested by police on Friday.
A police official said that the accused has been identified as 30-year-old Satish Kumar and was arrested under Section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle, etc, of any value or any animal of the value of Rs50) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 11 of the Prevention of Animal Cruelty Act.
The accused was on the run for quite a while. Several police teams were formed to nab him and he was finally arrested from a remote area in Outer Delhi’s Rohini.
The heinous crime committed by the accused had created a uproar among the animal lovers and NGOs held protests against the University administration alleging them of saving the security guard.
Police also said that a charge sheet in connection to the case will be filed soon. On February 17, a video showing the security guard of DTU beat up a street dog to death with a stick was circulated on social media by a student attracting animal lovers outrage.
Also, he shared the video with animal rights activists, who in turn got in touch with NGO People For Animals (PFA).
PFA’s Saurabh Gupta, who is also a member of the Animal Welfare Board, lodged a complaint with police and a case was registered at Shahbad Dairy Police Station in Rohini.
Gupta, who also went to DTU accompanied by animal lovers and activists, the next day alleged that a few dead dogs were found outside room number 110 of CV Raman hostel on Thursday.
Gupta said the guard with some of the other guards had killed many dogs on the order of the DTU administration and the security in-charge. He suspected that the carcass of the dogs had been buried somewhere on the campus.
“I request that a case be registered against officer Nitin Puri, security guard Satish Kumar, hostel caretaker Rakesh Mishra and Assistant Professor Raghvender Gautam,
Gupta had said in his complaint to the police.
