Dry, hot week ahead: Met

The Capital may experience temperatures as high as 45 degree Celsius in the next couple of days, forecasted the India Meteorological Department (IMD). It was also added that there will be no rain in the next seven days.

A senior official of the IMD said that the mercury is set to soar and is likely to hover between 44 and 45 degree Celsius. "The rise in temperatures will lead to heat wave conditions. The heat wave condition will be due to the absence of Western Disturbance (WD) activity. The sky will be clear and hot Northwesterly winds are expected," said a Met official.

Meanwhile, Monday's maximum temperature went up to 37.6 degree Celsius, a notch higher comparing to Sunday's temperature -- 36.1 degree Celsius and minimum -- 23.2 degree Celsius. The maximum and minimum humidity recorded was 69 and 26 per cent respectively. Palam was the hottest, with a maximum temperature of 39.0 degree Celsius, followed by Ayanagar with 38.4 degree Celsius and Faridabad with 38.2 degree Celsius.

"There will be no more WD this week. The maximum temperature over Delhi-NCR will be around 5 degree Celsius above normal. This would be the first sustained heat wave condition over this region, during the current summer season. There are high chances that these heat waves will be stronger after 15 May," said Dr OP Singh, deputy director General of meteorology, Delhi Regional Meteorological Centre.

Delhi's location is very critical, in most cases the WD just passes through Delhi which causes the sudden change in weather. When the WD touches Delhi, it causes rain or thunderstorm, which is the main reason why rains are transient, added Singh.

It is best for those people, who are always out in the open, to take precautions during the peak hours. The day's temperature is at its peak during 1pm to 4pm. The only way to avoid heat stroke is to cover the head and drink plenty of liquids.
