Down to the wire, AAP promises WiFi in 6 months

Following their plan to provide ‘degree, income and WiFi’ to the citizens of Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday said that they would provide WiFi in the city within six months of coming to power. Senior party leaders said that while the motive was to keep every citizen connected to the world, they want the citizens to use the internet to get all the information they need about Government dealings and also be able to file complaints. For this to be successful, convener

of Delhi Dialogue Aadarsh Shastri said that the party will launch an app called Aap Ki Sarkar, Aap Ke Duar.

“We are going to provide an information superhighway for every citizen of Delhi where they can access Internet everywhere. It will take six months to set up this connection all over Delhi and the expenditure in terms of one-time infrastructure and functional cost will be between Rs100 crore and Rs150 crore,” Shastri said.

To ensure that the WiFi also transforms into something productive, the party will develop a dedicated mobile application for people. AAP spokesperson Ashutosh said, “It will be a one stop shop for accessing any services provided by the Government. One can find whatever information they want be it about a birth certificate or a passport application. They can also file complaints on this forum and track their complaints. It will be a Delhi Government application which will cover all sectors like health and education.”

There will be a set way in which the WiFi will be provided as well so that it is not misused. Shastri said, “In a day, the WiFi will work for the first half and hour for free which is the time one can access enough information. However, after half an hour one can use the internet for gaming, entertainment, etc at a subscription. This is how it is done world over and we will adopt the same way.”

Another thing the party plans to focus on in Delhi Dialogue is providing a unified public transport smartcard where people can use one card for bus and Metro. “We can make a central body like the Transport Authority of london and regulate the use of these cards. The body will be an autonomous one,” Ashutosh said.
