The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration on Monday asked the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) not to hold protest on the campus on Tuesday over missing student Najeeb Ahmad issue in which a large number of outsiders are anticipated to participate which may create unrest and a security threat on the campus.
The statement was issued as it is understood that Jamia Millia Islamia students have given a call to join the JNU students to protest against the university administration and the Delhi Police for failing to crack Ahmad’s case.
In a late night circular issued by the varsity, it said, "The administration has come to know that JNUSU has given a call, 'Join National Call of Chalo JNU' to people for a rally and protest gathering at Ganga Dhaba on November 15, 2016 at 3:00 pm, without any prior permission from the competent authority of the University.
This warning is second in a row after Ahmad issue rattled the varsity. "Some students have been repeatedly violating university rules by staging protests, sit-ins, confinement of officials and obstructing the flow of traffic," Registrar, Pramod Kumar said in a statement.
last month, in order to build pressure on the administration against its alleged inaction, the JNU Student's Union had confined Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar for 24-hours to the administrative building. Ahmad had gone missing the morning after a brawl allegedly with the ABVP activists on October 14 night.
The V-C has underlined that the protests within the campus have caused hurdles for the smooth functioning of the university. "Such activities have not only been creating hurdles for smooth functioning of the university but also causing considerable inconvenience to the students, staff, teachers and residents of the campus, including children."
Mentioning that the campus allows democratic rights of dissent but students breaking the rules must "desist immediately."
"While democratic rights of dissent and lawful protests are permitted on the campus, the rule breaking students are instructed to immediately desist from such acts...This is to caution that disciplinary action will be taken against the violation of the rules and regulations," the registrar stated.
