Docs to be sensitised to adverse effects of drugs

The first ever workshop to sensitise doctors about adverse effects of drugs during clinical trial will be held in the Capital. All India Institute of Medical Sciences is conducting the programme on July 16 . Senior faculty members of six AIIMS — Patna, Bhubaneswar, Rishikesh, Bhopal, Raipur and Jodhpur — will  participate in the workshop.

The decision to conduct the workshop was taken after it was found that Pharmacovigilance (PV) survey is not being conducted on clinical trials. Pharmacovigilance is the pharmacological science relating to the collection, detection, assessment, monitoring, and prevention of adverse effects with pharmaceutical products.

Currently, PV survey is conducted after the drug is launched in the market and Central Drug Standard Control Orgnasiation (CDSCO) conducts drug trials after its launch in the market. The workshop will highlight on the need to assess, understand and prevent adverse drug reactions or any other possible drug-related problems during clinical trial.

It will also highlight on how to maintain a database and whom to approach for doing their scientific research on adverse effects of drugs during clinical trial. The workshop will also highlight the drugs that need to be launched in the market having no adverse effect on health.

Doctors are of the opinion that more drugs will be banned if PV survey is being conducted before the drug is launched in the market. Dr YK Gupta, professor and head of the department of Pharmacology AIIMS said, “We are also planning to conduct this workshop at all hospitals in India. Clinical research is one of the key concerns of the scientific community and thus we are focusing more on sensitising the doctors on adverse effects of drugs during clinical trials. There is urgent need to train the clinician who undertakes research during their post graduate courses.”
