DMRC blooper: Majlis Park named Mukundpur station

Published on:

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has landed in controversy over the naming of an upcoming station on the proposed Mukundpur-Shiv Vihar corridor.Contrary to the DMRC's claims that the upcoming corridor will connect Mukundpur and Shiv Vihar, the line will run from Majlis Park Colony to Shiv Vihar.

Following the revelation, the local leaders and resident welfare associations (RWAs) in Majlis Park colony have now upped the ante and demanded that the station be named as Majlis Park instead of Mukundpur. While the DMRC said that it is looking into the error, the issue has been handed over to the renaming committee of the Delhi Government.

For the Delhi Metro to make further inroads into the national Capital, the DMRC had announced the construction of 55.69 km corridor connecting Mukundpur to Yamuna Vihar and extending it further by 3 km till Shiv Vihar. The destination station of this corridor is now caught in controversy.

The DMRC, in the detailed project report (DPR) as well as other documents circulated for its Phase III network, has been claiming that the corridor will connect Mukundpur and Shiv Vihar.

However, in actual, the starting station doesn't fall in the Mukundpur area or the Burari legislative Assembly. The actual station will come up at Majlis Park colony, which will be a part of the Adarsh Nagar Assembly.

DMRC is also constructing a depot, which will be called Mukundpur depot. But the proposed depot is very far from the Mukundpur area. Former Minister for Social Welfare and chairman of Delhi Rural Development Board Mangat Ram Singhal wrote a letter to DMRC chief Mangu Singh raising the complaint with the Transport Department to change the name of the upcoming station to Majlis Park.

"There is a heavy demand from residents of Majlis Park colony to put the name of Majlis Park instead of Mukundpur and the committee set up by the Delhi Government is still considering it," states the letter written by Singhal dated May 23, 2013 to the Delhi Metro chief.

Transport Department Deputy Commissioner (planning) KR Naidu had also written a letter in the matter to the Chief Engineer (Planning) DMRC to rename the upcoming Metro station from Mukundpur to Majlis Park and suggesting that there could be financial implications if the names of the metro stations are changed after their construction. Executive Director, Corporate Communications, DMRC, Anuj Dayal said that the corporation is examining the facts available in the matter.
