Concerned over the rising incident of assault on resident doctors at emergency wards of city hospitals, Delhi Medical Council (DMC) has readied guidelines for deputing senior doctors at the casualty wards of all private and Government hospitals. Till now, only junior resident doctors pursuing MBBS and PG courses look after the patients at emergency ward. DMC will send the guidelines to the Delhi Government for the up-gradation of the health sector.

Besides, the guidelines will also focus on role on community, role of doctors, quality of  healthcare system, role of DMC, role of police, politicians and media, said DMC official.

Dr Girish Tyagi, Registrar DMC, told The Pioneer, “It has been noticed that junior resident doctors are often targeted by attendants accompanying the patients. The recent attacks on doctors are a cause of worry. After the recent meeting held with Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA), officials from the Delhi Police and DMC, detailed guidelines have been prepared. Apart from securing doctors on duty, the guidelines are aimed at improving the health sector of in the national Capital.”

If senior/professor level doctors are officiating, there will be cohesion among the doctors at the casualty of the hospitals “The presence of senior doctors will make patients confident for getting desired medical treatment and this will curtail the incidents of attacks on doctors at the casualty of the hospitals,” said Dr Tyagi.

A doctor at Government hospital said that in the past one year 30-40 instances of assault on doctors have taken place so far.

Meanwhile, Dr Pankaj Solanki, FORDA president said that we doctors have demanded improvement of  in working condition for the safety and security of doctors. This would help in providing better treatment to patients.
