DJB to start online monitoring of STPs

Delhi Jal Board (DJB) is chalking out a detailed plan to start an online monitoring system of Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) within this month. The initiative has been taken to speed up cleaning of stretch of the River Yamuna that passes through the national Capital. Through this online monitoring system of STPs, the DJB will ensure that the only treated water, which meets prescribed standard as per Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), is discharged into the Yamuna River. At present, there is manual monitoring of STPs, which is time consuming and its working frequency is slow. For this, DJB has floated the tenders of about Rs12 crore.

Speaking to The Pioneer, DJB CEO SS Yadav said: “Currently, standard and quality of treated water from STPs is being checked manually before draining it into the River Yamuna, which is time-consuming process.” To achieve the target for clean Yamuna drive, online monitoring system of STPs is very essential, he added.

Besides, DJB is also preparing a blueprint to tackle the contamination of the River Yamuna. “We are trying to ensure that treated water discharged into Yamuna meets the prescribed standard as per CPCB,” said Yadav. More initiatives are in the pipeline for Yamuna Cleanliness drive, he added.

The treated water samples are tested to check the of elements like Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), nitrates and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) etc.

The comprehensive analyses of the data for the treated water will be uploaded online by DJB officials, so that public can access this information. “DJB officials and even public can procure the record of treated water which will be drained in the Yamuna River,” Yadav said, adding that public can also tell us about the mistake or correction need to be done.

It may be noted that the Aam Adami Party-led Delhi Government has announced to develop picnic spots near Yamuna in its budget 2015-2016. DJB wants to fast track this process through online monitoring of STPs.
