The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has started hydropower generation plant in order to meet its energy requirements. The plant was launched on a pilot basis this month. It is located near Chilla Village in East Delhi and likely to produce nearly 20 Megawatt unit of energy in a year for the DJB. After the successful start of the electrical plant, the DJB is likely to generate more energy generation methods/ techniques in the coming months.
According to the senior official of DJB, the power generation is partially going to meet the energy requirements for the organisation. “It is being done on the pilot basis, which is going to produce the sufficient electrical energy.”
In this process, before draining the effluent water from Sewerage Treatment Plant (STPs) into the Yamuna river, it will be poured into a turbine from a height which is followed by hydroelectric power process. Solar panels are being installed to generate over 20 Megawatt (MW) of electrical energy in a year, said the official.
These Solar-powered panels convert the sun’s rays into electricity by exciting electrons in silicon cells using the photons of light from the sun. This generated electricity can then be used to supply renewable energy.
“Currently, at three locations including Okhla, Kondli and Rithala, biogas generation is conducted which produces about 5,000 unit energy per day,” the official said.
With this, the DJB is now generating three types of energy- biogas, solar energy and hydro power, said the official. The hydroelectric process converts the mechanical energy of falling water into electrical energy that can be used in homes and businesses.
