The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has recovered over Rs1 crore from the commercial and industrial land holders for failing to install rainwater harvesting system. Now, the deadline of October 1 has been given to the domestic households to install the rain water harvesting unit to protect them from 30 per cent increased water tariffs from the next billing cycle. It is compulsory to install rain water harvesting unit according to the Delhi Water & Sewer (Tariff and Metering) Regulations, 2012.

The DJB had identified over 5,000 commercial and industrial lands which did the installation of rain water harvesting units. “We have recovered the penalty of over one crore rupees from commercial and industrial landholders,” said senior DJB official.

From October 1, this will be applicable to residential lands having 500 square yards and above. They will be charged 30 per cent increased water tariffs from next billing cycle, added the official.

These increased tariffs will become normal once the consumer will put up the rain water installation process by getting them register at DJB office. Moreover, DJB officials are visiting the every location to ensure that people are working upon the orders of DJB.

It may be noted that, with this DJB is hoping to spread the awareness regarding rain water harvesting. For this, DJB has also sought help from NGOs and asked them to find out such 100 institutions and prepare them for the rainwater harvesting plan.

“We have coordinated with Intact and Force NGO to spread awareness among people on rainwater harvesting by conducting workshops and campaigns.”
