DJB moves HC as Haryana effluent ups ammonia level

The Delhi Government is approaching Delhi High Court after the reports of high levels of ‘Ammonia’ in Yamuna water. In an official statement released on Monday, the Delhi Government said the raw water quality has deteriorated at Wazirabad water treatment plant since Friday.

“The present ammonia level in the Yamuna River is 02.2 ppm due to which 30 per cent production has been curtailed at different water plants of Delhi, namely, Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Okhla. Further, rationalisation of drinking water has been done at other plants,” said Government official, adding, “This is due to the discharge of industrial waste and high level of pollutants in river Yamuna in Haryana. Now, the Delhi Jal Board has decided to move the Delhi High Court to get a solution to the perpetual problem.”

According to officials, the responsible agency - Delhi Jal Board (DJB) in its    prayer to the high court is going to state about the problem of Ammonia level in the polluted water in the Wazirabad water treatment plant.

The prayer further states, “This is almost the double of what can be treated at Wazirabad and thus urgent directions are required to be given to CPCB and the other respondents to stop this pollution. “It is most respectfully submitted that the Irrigation Department of Haryana is directly in control of the sources from which the water comes into the river Yamuna at Delhi”.

TA senior official further said that illegal bunds have been recently created in the channel DD-8 and the same cannot be created without the consent or direction of Irrigation department of Haryana. “This is also the channel through which any additional water can be supplied to Delhi for diluting the pollution ( in case the pollution cannot be controlled) so that the water supplied in the river course can be made treated for drinking at Wazirabad,” the official added.
