Unlike the popular sports categories like athletics, football, basketball etc in which thousands apply and hundreds of applicants get shortlisted at Delhi University (DU), there are certain less sought-out games like diving, best physique, squash etc. in which very few apply and even fewer get selected.
A Delhi University official said on the condition of anonymity that although these games are very popular at national and international level events including the Asian games, Commonwealth Games (CWG) and Olympics, there are very few takers for these in DU and the "foot-fall" usually remains generally low.
Also, among those selected in these top 5 "less sought out" games, except for the Best Physique which is for the men only, the ratio of female candidates is less than that to their male counterparts. Coming to the numbers of female applicants who got shortlisted, in Diving there is only 1 female candidate and in Squash and Weight-lifting 5 women each are found to be eligible after sports certificate marking. However, in Korfball 13 female candidates are shortlisted.
