Despite repeated requests to Delhi Jal Board (DJB) for providing drinking water, the residents of resettlement areas are forced to drink contaminated water, while other families, which can afford, are relying on water cans sold in the market.

The residents claimed to have made several visits to the DJB offices and lodged several complaints, but all they get in return was dirty water. The Pioneer on Tuesday visited some resettlement colonies of the city to check the ground reality and found that people out of options but to drink water that was muddy and highly unhygienic.

In JJ cluster area near Rajinder Nagar, people said that water supply comes only in the morning but is not fit for drinking. Renu (55) a housewife said, “We have approached our area MlA Rajendra Garg and DJB authorities many times regarding the matter but nothing has been done till date. They just give assurances to solve our problems, while the problem persists.”

“From the past one month, water is being supplied only in the morning and it’s too dirty to be used for household purposes,” said Pushpa (34), and added that we are drinking contaminated water every day as there was no other alternative.

Naraina village’s situation is no different as people there are also out of options. Savita (43), a resident of the area, said, “Supply water here has a pungent smell. The moment we open a tap, the entire house starts to smell foul. We are buying water jars everyday for drinking purposes.”

When asked about the complaints of the residents, local MlA Rajendra Garg said, “I have spoken to the DJB officials for resolving the issue of contaminated water that was being supplied in certain resettlement areas. The work was under progress to redress the grievance of the people.”
