Display method of slaughtering: EDMC to all restaurants serving meat

East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has issued an order making it mandatory to all restaurants and shops selling or serving meat in East Delhi area to display the method of slaughtering chicken and meat dishes or face prosecution.

The decision has been taken considering sentiments of the people. With the decision, they (restaurants and shops) will have to put a board in front of their shops specifying whether the meat they are selling or serving is of 'jhatka' or 'halal', said EDMC Mayor Bipin Bihari Singh.

Singh further said that the direction has been issued by the EDMC in this regard. "The civic body will first make them aware of the new rules for the first one or two month thereafter they would be served a show-cause notice and prosecuted accordingly.

The resolution to that effect was cleared by the standing committee of the BJP-led civic body and passed in the house meeting later, a senior EDMC official said.

The EDMC in the resolution claimed that consumption of halal meat is "not allowed" as per the Hindu and Sikh religions.

It will be mandatory for all east Delhi restaurants to display a written message on the same. "The standing committee resolves that instructions be issued that all restaurants and shops should mandatorily display boards mentioning if the meat being sold or served is halal or 'jhatka'," the resolution said.

Mayor has asked the restaurants and eating joints to mandatorily comply with the requirements. He also directed Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) and Assistant Public Health Inspectors to ensure a proper implementation of this order.
