Various universities in Delhi have also been doing their bit to ensure that the Swachchh Bharat Abhiyan is executed properly.
While Delhi University has created a Swachchhata Abhiyaan Samiti to look over the entire process of cleanliness, Jamia Millia Islamia launched a cleanliness drive across its various departments. The Department of Training and Technical Education was the first to take up the campaign after which other universities followed. Delhi University has made a team of 20 teachers who will be overlooking the entire process of selection. “All colleges affiliated to the university in both the campuses have been made conscious of the urgent need to bring about a transformational change in terms of cleanliness. Thus, keeping in mind this urgency and importance of the task at hand, the Vice Chancellor has constituted this team,” said the Registrar.
A set of guidelines have also been laid out for this committee. The committee is supposed to enhance the role of the NSS and bring synergy between activities of the NSS and need for campus cleanliness and safety. They are also expected to visit colleges and device methods for waste management. On the other hand, at Jamia Millia Islamia, the director of MHRD Dr Harpreet Singh, visited them to take stock of the Swachchh Bharat Abhiyan. He visited the Central library, canteens, various departments and centres of the university and applauded the university administration and other stakeholders for taking proactive initiative to make the programme successful. He closely monitored the activities of the students, teachers and staff in respect of the cleanliness drive. He suggested that the university could segregate biodegradables from the non-biodegradables and set up recycling units for internal consumption in collaboration with NGOs. He felt that Jamia could devise a mechanism for garbage disposal and make the campus garbage-free. “Jamia is already in the process of putting systems and processes in place to make the campus environment-friendly,” said an official from JMI.
