Dhoom-inspired gang of thieves busted, including schoolteacher

Two men, including a Government schoolteacher in Haryana, have been arrested for a Dhoom-inspired robbery case in Paharganj. The incident took place two months ago, when they stole around 400 grams of gold after drilling the floor of a hotel room to enter the jewellery store in the basement.

Rajender Singh Dagi (48), the mastermind behind the break-in, has a degree in MA and BEd and he is serving as a teacher in Senior Secondary Government School in Jhajjar, Haryana. He was arrested along with his associate Abhimanyu, alias Kala (19) from Haryana by the Crime Branch of Delhi Police, following a tip-off.

Jewellery worth `2 lakh has been recovered from them along with a sophisticated house-breaking instrument, some gas cutters, drilling machines, gloves and other equipments used in the crime. “They told the hotel authorities that the gas cylinders were actually filled with oxygen needed for one of their associates who is visiting Delhi for treatment. They had also used gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ashok Chand.

During the interrogation, it was revealed that Singh was under heavy debt and decided to thieve to repay his loan. He roped in Abhimanyu, alias Kala and Sonu from his neighbouring village. The gang was inspired by the first movie in the Dhoom series, where John Abraham, along with his cronies, commits a similar heist after renting hotel rooms.

Buoyed by their success, the gang visited Panipat, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Rohtak and Gurgaon to identify jewellery shops with hotel rooms above them for committing burglaries but before they could commit any other crime, they were apprehended, added the police.
