Derring-do bikers, CCTVs on l-G radar

A high-level Security Commission meeting chaired by lieutenant Governor of Delhi on Friday decided to approach the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for installing 10,000 CCTV cameras across the city for security purposes since the Capital faces threat from various terror outfits.

The meeting also expressed concerns over derring-do bikers in the city and asked Delhi Police to enforce discipline on roads and also recommended the lowering of the age of the juvenile keeping in mind the magnitude of the crime committed on December 16. There was a nationwide furor over the involvement of a juvenile in the said gang-rape but he escaped the gallows by virtue of his age. With Security Commission, under the Chairmanship of l-G Delhi, comprising Chief Minister, leader of Opposition, Commissioner of Police and the Principal Secretary Home, all pitching for lowering the age, the issue is expected to gain impetus.

Well-placed sources said that the Security Commission meeting discussed the city’s safety and security in the wake of looming Navratra and Ramlila festivities.

There are Intelligence intercepts with central security agencies about Pakistan sponsored terrorist groups devising a conspiracy to avenge the arrest of lashkar commander Abdul Karim Tunda and Yasin Bhatkal, the chief of the debarred Indian Mujahideen (IM). Mounting CCTVs across the Capital was proposed to ensure that all those entering city limits with evil intent are stopped in their tracks.

The CCTV cameras have been already installed at certain markets and all the vital installations are under the watchful gaze of the electronic eye. The Commission on Friday decided to write to MHA in this regard as there was a greater need for CCTVs all over the city.

The Security Commission also deliberated over the issue of the age of a juvenile in the light of national outrage over the juvenile involved in the gang-rape of the 23-year-old paramedic.

The Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) had sentenced the accused juvenile on multiple counts, including gang-rape, murder and dacoity, but he was given a three-year stay in a remand home. Sources averred that the Security Commission was of the view that a recommendation should be made to the Centre for lowering the age since there have been a spate of barbaric crimes involving juveniles.

The third issue that the Security Commission discussed pertained to the nuisiance value of derring-do bikers risking life and limb as they performed stunts on city roads, especially in New Delhi district.
