The Gurugram Police has written a letter to DGP of Haryana to deploy officers from the North-East in the district. The city police have asked for around 16 personnel on deputation from North-East States.
The Gurugram Police had already launched a dedicated helpline-0124-2301559 for people from the North-East in 2014 so that they can provide information about untoward incidents against them which take place in the district.
"We have asked for 16 personnel on deputation. So that we can tackle matters related to the North-Easterners better," Gurugram Police Commissioner, Sandeep Khirwar, said.
In the wake of recent attacks on people from the North-East in the city, the Gurugram Police have taken this step and also informed the top officials in the State.
At present DCP (east) Deepak Saharan, who is Chief Nodal Officer for Crime against People from North-East said, "We require such officers who also belong to North-East State so that the victims can share their problems without any hesitation with the police."
In a recent attack, a 26-year-old woman from Sikkim was allegedly gangraped by three unidentified men in a moving car on Saturday. Earlier, a young man from Imphal, Manipur was brutally thrashed and humiliated by his employers in an alleged racist attack on January 13. In another case, two young men from Nagaland were allegedly beaten up by over a dozen people at Sikanderpur Village here on October 16 last year.
"The demand for dedicated personnel for North-Easterners attended by an English-speaking cop has been one of our long-standing demands.
"The language problem between us and the police is greater in Gurugram with the constabulary preferring to speak in local language.
"It caused difficulty in seeking help from the Control Room in emergency situations," said a member of the North-East Support Centre and Helpline in Gurugram on condition of anonymity.
Most of the North-Easterners staying in Gurugram on rent are mostly in the East area like Housing Board Colony on Mehrauli-Gurugram Road, DlF Phase-3, Patel Nagar, Sikanderpur, Nathupur, Sukhrali and Chakkarpur villages.
There are more than 3,000 North-Easterners working in call centres and retail and hospitality sectors.
Although their population in Gurugram is quite less compared to neighbouring Delhi, the nature of the problems faced by them is the same.
