Dengue stings Capital early

The dengue virus has caught the national Capital a little too early as the year’s first dengue case was registered by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) in the month of March at the Karol Bagh civic zone in North Delhi. This is the first time in many years that a case of dengue has been registered with them this early.

According to statistics, the cases of dengue become frequent in the months of April and May. Irrespective of that data, this year has overall had lesser cases in total compared to last year. As per records, up till April 19, a total of four cases were registered in 2013. However, in comparison to that, only one case has been registered this year.

The month when the virus is severely detected in the city is from July to December with September and October being the worst. However, figures show that 2011 was the least dengue hit month with only 1131 cases registered in the NCR. The year 2010 was the worst hit with 6259 cases reported. In this case, it was the first time after 2012 that a case got registered in the month of March. Meanwhile, the civic body officials claimed that they were taking all precautionary measures, including domestic breeding checking in every household. “From January till date, the North Delhi corporation has sprayed a total of 18,922 houses in the city and visited 1,06,64,760 houses for domestic breeding checking. Among these houses, 5,649 were found positive for breeding and 7,045 were issued legal notices for

having a mosquitogenic condition in the house. 98 prosecution cases have been launched so far as compared to 422 in 2013 when 12,574 legal notices were issued,” said YS Mann, Director (Press Information), NDMC.
