Delhiites wanted him hanged, but not by self

like family of the December 16 gang-rape victim, the news of alleged suicide attempt by main accused in the case Ram Singh surprised people in the city. However, their astonishment had slight mix of disappointment as they wanted him to be hanged legally. Stating that sooner or later, he was supposed to be met with the same fate they said it would have been better, had he been proven guilty and punished after proper trial. Putting blame on the Government, they also said the incident indicates towards slow pace of trial.

A class student of a reputed private school in the Capital, Kanishka Sharma, said, “It does not matter whether he committed suicide or he would have been hanged, he deserved death punishment anyways,” she said, adding that remaining all should also be given death sentence as soon as possible.

“They have no right to live who raped the girl brutally. Every girl has to face vulgar comments and eve-teasing every day on the street. Harder possible punishment given to these beasts will deter others,” Sharma said. An artist by profession, Harsimrat Kaur said the suicide committed by the main accused might be realisation of gruesome crime committed by him but it would have better if he was hanged.

“He might have felt guilty himself for his inhuman act…Ram Singh’s suicide in Tihar Jail is evident example of failure of our system because it is very surprising that he committed suicide despite lodged in high-security cell,” she said. The same view was expressed by Nitin Bhardwaj, who is a practicing advocate in the Capital. “No leniency was to be given to Ram Singh. People would have been more satisfied if he was given death penalty after due legal trial. Then, his death could have a message for those who dare to commit such ghastly act. I personally feel that the trial should be faster,” he said.

They were people who were bit disappointed with the news of the suicide of Ram Singh as they wanted to see him to hanged.
